UX Design Internship | Summer 2024

During the summer, I embraced the exciting challenge of redesigning the website for a small design firm in Burlington, VT. This internship marked my first official step into the world of UX/UI design after spending a semester self-teaching the principles of human-centered design.

The company wanted to transition from a subscription-based system to a more flexible and accessible model that attracts a diverse range of customers with varying needs. Utilizing Figma, I developed wireframes and user flows to present design concepts, focusing on enhancing the overall user experience and boosting engagement.

Vision for Enhancing UX

  • Utilize the brand color more sparingly and enhance the white background to make text stand out.

  • Incorporate more graphic elements to reinforce the company's strength in visual design and creativity.

  • Replace the subscription-based user flow with strategically placed Call-to-Action (CTA) buttons after each section, directing users to a contact page. This allows for tailored services based on customer needs.

  • Optimize the user journey for a more intuitive and engaging experience by restructuring existing content.

About the Design

  • Rounded UX Elements: Introduced softer, rounded design elements to enhance the graphic appeal, aligning with the company’s strengths in visual creativity.

  • Light Pink Background: Chosen to retain the company’s brand identity while projecting a professional yet approachable energy, balancing existing colors with a polished aesthetic.

  • Typeface Selection: Fractul Variable, a geometric sans-serif typeface, was chosen for its clean, modern look that blends minimalism with a strong structure, creating a professional yet friendly tone.

  • Implementation of CTAs: Transitioned from a subscription-based pricing model while maintaining an interactive user experience.

  • Accordion Buttons: Added to give users control over the content they wish to explore, enhancing the overall usability.

  • Background Graphics: Introduced playful, graphic elements to align with the company’s preference for a fun and visually engaging site.

Final Remarks

  • The company typically caters to a smaller range of specific clients, and as a result, they do not conduct formal testing for their designs. This design followed that practice, receiving approval and positive feedback from the team.

  • Due to the company’s preference for developing sites on Webflow, the high-fidelity prototype was intentionally designed with limited interactions to facilitate a smoother handoff process for the developer. I’m gradually mastering these skills and am deeply passionate about a potential career in digital design.
